Information

Limnos Lesvou

Lemnos, the island of Hephaestus, is located in the heart of the northern Aegean, between Mount Athos and the shores of the Hellespont. It is the eighth largest Greek island and administratively belongs to the department of Lesbos. It is a volcanic island with small hills and vast plains covered with crops (mainly cereals and vines). You will notice a lack of trees on Lemnos since the only forest that exists on the island is petrified. The large lagoons are home to many species of birds. The trademark of the island is the huge population of flamingos that live there.

The capital of the island is Myrina which is located between two bays of the harbor. The old castle of the island can still be found on the steep hill that separates the two bays. Romeikos Gialos is the most picturesque part of the city with beautiful cobbled streets, old mansions and quiet taverns. Other traditional villages worth exploring are Thanos, Kaspakas, Kontias and the coastal Moudros.

Today Lemnos is an island where traditions are a part of people's lives. The locals are friendly and famous for their great cooking abilities and sweet wine which they make themselves. A trip to Lemnos will reward you with unique experiences and you will get to know a different aspect of the Aegean beauty.

How to get there:

By ship: Lemnos is connected to Piraeus by ferry two to three times a week (duration of the journey: approximately 11 hours). There is also coastal connection with the ports of Kavala (duration of the journey: 5 hours) and Thessaloniki (duration of the journey: 8 hours). The port of Myrina is connected to Ayios Efstratios, Lavrio, Psara, Samothrace, Mytilene, Alexandroupolis (through Samothrace) and Chios.

By plane: From the Airport of Lemnos "Hephaestus", there are daily flights to Athens (duration: approximately 45 minutes). Also, there are flights to Mytilene, Thessaloniki and Ikaria. The frequency of the services varies according to the season.
